The members of the Society for Asphalt Technology (SAT) have a common goal, to promote excellence in and elevate the reputation of the asphalt industry as a key enabler to infrastructure development in South Africa and southern Africa. Since its inauguration in 1994, SAT has attracted an influential membership of individuals representing all aspects of the asphalt industry, from Students entering the roads sector to Fellows & Honorary Members with many decades of experience to share.

JOHAN DE KOKER – A COLLEAGUE WHO WILL BE MISSED
The Society for Asphalt Technology joins the South African civil engineering community in paying tribute to Johan de Koker, who passed on Friday 1 December.
Many members of SAT have worked alongside Johan in his quest to raise professionalism in the profession and recognition for the talented engineers who build and maintain South Africa’s built environment. “This year SAT has collaborated closely with Johan in his capacity as CEO of the Institute of Professional Engineering Technologists (IPET) to create a common audit programme for ECSA,” says John Onraet, SAT Operations Manager.

SAT Members Step up at CAPSA 23
The passing of Adrian Bergh is an enormous loss to the South African road industry. He was an unsurpassed innovator in pavement and materials engineering and a passionate and committed mentor to many.
Adrian Oloff Bergh was born on 18 September 1923 in Belfast (eMakhazeni), Mpumalanga, and passed away in May 2023, a few months before his centenary birthday. He contributed tirelessly to the industry until he was well into his 90s, pioneering many techniques that we take for granted today.
His work will continue to be widely referenced well into the future, keeping this giant in our industry very much alive as one of the best minds in our profession over many decades…
