Tafadzwa Mafuma
Tafadzwa (Taffy) completed her BSc in Civil Engineering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2013 and is currently working towards her M.Eng. in Pavement Engineering at Stellenbosch University.
She is Technical Manager for the Northern Region of AECI Much Asphalt and also has experience on the contracting side of the industry, having played a role in rehabilitation projects involving BSMs, asphalt and seal works in different parts of South Africa.
Taffy aspires to be a well-seasoned pavement engineer and to get her professional registration in the near future.
Nishaat Mowzer
Nishaat Mowzer is a Professional Engineer with over 12 years’ experience in pavement design. She completed her BSc Eng in Civil Engineering in 2009 at the University of Cape Town and her MEng in Pavement Engineering in 2019 at Stellenbosch University.
Nishaat began her career at KV3 Engineers in January 2010 as a graduate engineer and has remained with the company until 2022 through name changes to WorleyParsons RSA and iX engineers. She begins a new position as Associate Pavement Engineer at Zutari in June 2022.
She has worked extensively on all aspects of the design of new roads and the maintenance, rehabilitation and upgrading of roads, for clients such as the City of Cape Town, local municipalities, SANRAL, the Western Cape Provincial Government and ACSA.
Dr Elaine Goosen
Elaine is a Pavement Engineer and Lecturer in Civil Engineering at Stellenbosch University, specialising in Pavement Engineering and Bitumen Rheology.
Elaine completed her BEng in Civil Engineering in 2011 and her PhD in 2021, with the award of various bursaries and scholarships testifying to her talent and dedication.
She spent a semester at Technische Universiteit in Delft, Netherlands, as an Exchange Student in Civil Engineering, and worked for WorleyParsons RSA as a Graduate Civil Engineer and then Assistant Resident Engineer in Roads and Stormwater.
Elaine is establishing her research career focusing on sustainable pavement materials and applying numerical models and machine learning to materials datasets.

Kele Makamu
Kele is a Civil Engineering Technologist with more than a decade of experience in road material testing and management of civil engineering materials laboratories. She completed her B-Tech degree in Transportation Engineering at Tshwane University of Technology in 2015.
She is currently Laboratory and Quality Manager at the CSIR’s Advanced Material Testing Laboratory.
Kele’s career started in 2004 at the Johannesburg Roads Agency Laboratory where she was a Soils and Concrete Officer. From there she moved to Aurecon for four years as an Associate Laboratory Supervisor. In 2010 she joined the CSIR as a Lab Supervisor and in 2015 she returned to the JRA as Laboratory and Technical Services Manager.
Prior to her current role she worked for three years at Specialised Road Technologies as an Operational Executive.

Tumelo Thothela
Tumelo Thothela completed his BSc in Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town in 2007, followed by an MEng in Civil Engineering specialising in Pavement Engineering at Stellenbosch University.
He has been involved in all aspects of projects including the planning and execution of visual condition assessments, centreline materials surveys, development of rehabilitation strategies, sourcing of materials, mechanistic pavement design and analysis, as well as drafting of tender documents and contract administration.
Tumelo also graduated with an MBA from the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) in 2017. He is a co-founder and Operations Director of Royal Mndawe Holdings (ROMH Consulting), responsible for strategy, business development, marketing, operational and personnel management, staff training and mentoring, engineering design and contract administration.

Gretchen Weber
Gretchen is a Civil Engineering Technologist with more than 20 years’ experience in all aspects of road projects. She obtained her National Diploma (Civil – Materials) at Pretoria Technikon in 1998 and her BTech (Civil) at Tshwane University of Technology in 2000. She has also completed Stellenbosch University’s Construction Management Programme.
Gretchen began her career with the Department of Transport and Public Works, moving on to Kwezi V3 Engineers as a Materials Technician, growing into the roles of Resident Engineer and Assistant Laboratory Manager. In 2011 she joined WorleyParsons RSA where she further expanded her experience in the industry.
She has been with SANRAL for the past eight years, currently as a Materials and Pavement Specialist for SANRAL Western Region.

Trevor Zumani
Trevor is a Project Manager in SANRAL’s Eastern Region, currently looking after some Capex projects under Design and Construct Division and some Routine Road Maintenance projects in KZN and Free State.
He graduated in 2005 with an ND Civil Engineering at the Durban University of Technology and went on to complete various qualifications in project and quality management. He obtained a B.Tech. Civil Eng. Urban Planning at the Vaal University of Technology in 2017 and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Programme Management at Cranefield College in 2021. He is an ISO9001 Certified Provisional Auditor registered with SAATCA and professionally registered with ECSA as Pr Techni Eng.
He gained his early experience in the private sector, starting his career at Rand Roads (Grinaker-LTA), followed by Edwin Construction (a division of WBHO) then Themba Consulting Engineers. Thereafter he joined Johannesburg Water for seven years before moving to SANRAL four years ago.
TECHNICAL EXPERTS & MENTORS
Steph graduated from Stellenbosch University in 1977 and completed his Master’s degree in artificial intelligence in 2000. His career started at Sishen Iron Ore Mine, where he gained valuable experience in systems development and computer science.
He later joined the Kimberley City Council before moving into consulting engineering as a Director and Partner in Entech Consultants in Stellenbosch, which later became part of WSP. Following a short period with Goba Consulting Engineers, he was appointed by SANRAL as Western Region Project Manager for Research.
Steph retired from SANRAL in 2019 and is now a Principal Specialist at Naidu Consulting Engineers, where he also leads the Cape Town office.
He is a registered professional engineer, a Fellow of the SAICE and an Honorary Member (and founder member) of SAT. He played a leading role in the development of the new Performance-grade Binder Specification in South Africa and has chaired the RPF Bituminous Materials Committee.
Emile is a consulting engineer specialising in roads and airport engineering. His company, Kubu Consultancy, offers pavement and materials engineering consulting services.
Emile holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Pretoria and has completed further postgraduate studies at UNISA and the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town. He also has an MSc in Transportation Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
Emile’s career began in 1976 as a researcher with the CSIR, where he progressed to Head of Pavement Engineering.
He then became City Engineer with the Johannesburg City Council, followed by Head of Service Delivery in the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Council in the transition period to the new democratic South Africa in 1994/1995.
After two years with Murray and Roberts, Emile moved into education and served as Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Pretoria for 10 years.
Kim has Bachelor’s and Honours degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and completed his PhD at the University of Stellenbosch in 2000.
He began his career as a Geotechnical Engineer, designing foundations and retaining walls, and later expanded into Pavement Engineering, with an interest in Materials Engineering bridging these fields. Kim found his niche in road rehabilitation, focusing on the development of sustainable technologies in cold recycling of pavements. His research has appeared in more than 150 publications.
Kim researched half-warm foamed bitumen as part of his PhD at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands before joining his alma mater as an Associate Professor in 2001. He is currently Professor of Civil Engineering at Stellenbosch University and fills the SANRAL Research Chair in Pavement Engineering. More than 100 postgraduate degrees in pavement engineering have been awarded in his tenure.
Herman is Director – Technical Plant and Materials, at AECI Much Asphalt. He has a National Higher Diploma in Material Testing: Civil from Pretoria Technikon and specialises in quality control, asphalt technology and geotechnical engineering.
Herman’s first job was with SANRAL during his studies in the 1980s. In 1990 he accepted a position with Con Roux Construction as Manager of the main laboratory and five site laboratories. From there he became General Manager of Labman, where he remained for nine years.
Herman balanced his laboratory expertise with strong consulting experience on a wide range of road projects during five years with Potgieter, Hattingh and Raspi Consulting Engineers before moving to AECI Much Asphalt in 2005.
He serves on various technical committees and industry bodies such as SABITA and SAT and is President of the latter.
Professor Mohamed Mostafa started his career as an academic in Egypt before moving to the UK and then South Africa.
He is currently Associate Professor (Geotechnics and Pavement) and Academic Leader at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He also co-chairs the Sustainable Transportation Research Group, which focuses on sustainable and green transportation solutions.
Mohamed’s primary expertise lies in all aspects of pavement research, including the use of recycled or waste materials in pavement engineering and characterization of bituminous pavement materials.
He has undertaken research on pavement modelling, life cycle assessment, and management systems, as well as smart transportation.
Mohamed is recognized as researcher category A by SANRAL, and undertakes multiple professional engagements with ECSA, SARF, SAT and SAICE. Â He has published more than 70 articles and serves as a reviewer for multiple international publishers.
Pieter graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1965. He was employed by the Provincial Roads Department and ultimately held the post of Materials Engineer in the department.
In 1982 Pieter was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Southern African Bitumen Association (Sabita), where he remained until his retirement in 2006. In this role he was responsible for instigating research, development and implementation programmes to enhance the cost-effective use of bituminous products in road pavements.
Since his retirement Pieter has acted as a specialist consultant in pavement and materials engineering. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineering and a Fellow of the Society for Asphalt Technology.
Saied holds a Bachelor of Commerce from UNISA and a Civil Engineering Certificate from Peninsula Technikon (Cape Town).
Saied began his career as an Engineering Technician and went on to accumulate more than three decades of experience in the petroleum, oil and gas industry. A businessman with a technical bias by training, he held roles in marketing, operations and strategy with Engen/Mobil Oil.
He rose to GM of health, safety, security, environment and product quality, and was then appointed Director of Sales and Marketing. This position encompassed lubricants, retail partnerships, operations, sales and distribution, as well as board responsibilities for the Botswana affiliate, Namibian operations and Petronas’ Thailand retail network.
Saied joined SABITA as Chief Executive Officer in May 2009.
Prof Steyn is Head of Department and Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, as well as Chair of the School of Engineering, at the University of Pretoria.Â
He completed both his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Pretoria and is a professionally registered pavement engineer with a research interest in vehicle-pavement interaction, accelerated pavement testing, pavement engineering, pavement materials, Civiltronics and instrumentation.
Wynand has authored and edited numerous papers and book chapters. He is Associate Editor of the International Journal for Pavement Engineering and the International Journal of Pavement Research and Technology and has a B3 National Research Foundation (NRF) rating. He is a Fellow of both the SAICE and the SAAE and an Adjunct Professor at the Chang’an University in Xian and the Shandong Jianzhu University in Jinan, China.
Gerrie van Zyl, Director of Mycube Asset Management Systems, has been involved in the planning, design, construction, maintenance and management of roads since 1983. He holds Bachelor’s, Honours and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Pretoria.
For the past 20 years Gerrie has been Contracts Engineer or Specialist Design Engineer on reseal, rehabilitation, regravel and upgrading projects in South Africa. He has investigated numerous premature failures for road authorities, consultants and contractors.
Gerrie authored TRH3 & SABITA Manual 40 (Design and construction of surface treatments), SABITA Manual 28 (Design and construction of slurry seals) and SABITA Manual 10 (Appropriate surfacings for low volume roads), co-authored TRH20 (Design, construction and maintenance of gravel roads) and presented more than 100 courses and seminars globally.
