The Society promotes, supports and encourages graded levels of technical training as an integral element of its continuing professional development (CPD) program.
While SAT develops and presents technology exchange, seminars and workshops in its own right as regional activities, the principal centre for training in bituminous technology in southern Africa is carried out by the independent Asphalt Academy (AsAc). AsAc is a joint venture between Sabita and CSIR, and SAT actively fosters the mutually beneficial cooperative synergy inherent in the common objectives of the two organisations. AsAc maintains close links with institutions of learning, training providers, the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) and industry to ensure that training material and best-practice information developed and/or presented by AsAc is current, globally relevant and industry specific. SAT promotes the attendance at AsAc’s courses, workshops and seminars by its members and also provides an important forum for more detailed debate of national best-practice information at regional level for feedback and incorporation by AsAc.
The current list of AsAc courses can be found on the AsAc web site.
In addition , the Society supports the four-yearly Conference on Asphalt Pavements for Southern Africa (Capsa ’11) through representation and participation in the steering committees and technical committees. At regional level the Society periodically organises site visits, workshops and interactive social gatherings in pursuit of shared experience and technology transfer (see Events). SAT members can enjoy discounts of as much as 30% when attending these technology transfer sessions which provide functional accessibility to best-practice information sharing for professionals whose time is constantly restricted by work commitments.
